Mental Resilience: Spartan Race CEO Joe De Sena
Lessons from 11M racers & 24 years building one of the hardest businesses
Building Mental Resilience
Joe De Sena is an entrepreneur, endurance athlete, and the founder of Spartan Race, a globally recognized series of obstacle course races. He is also absolutely no BS, tells it to you straight, & is incredibly enjoyable to listen to. This was a very fun conversation. And yes, I was a little bit scared.
Spartan Race has become a global phenomenon, with events in 45 countries, over 11 million people crossing the finish line, 1,100 races this year, a cult following so loyal that more than hundreds of thousands have the Spartan logo tattooed—some even on their faces..
“I get paid in people telling me that their lives changed.”
We explore a wide range of topics, beginning with the importance of mental resilience and how he's developed a "resilience flywheel" to help people strengthen their minds and bodies. He delves into the powerful cult following of Spartan Race, even touching on how technology like AI could play a role in the brand’s evolution.
Joe also shares his thoughts on the tension between chasing money versus purpose, using examples such as Purdue Pharma and Red Dye No. 3. He provides insights into mergers and acquisitions, scaling Spartan Race, and advice on navigating competitive industries. The discussion transitions to investing in the fitness industry and wraps up with practical tips for training for Spartan Race along with what excites Joe most about the future heading into 2025.
Joe also told me to carry around a 30lb rock this year, so if you see me with a large rock, don’t be surprised & don’t afraid to say hi.. to both of us.

Why Spartan CEO Joe De Sena Fled Wall Street and Moved to a Farm
Joe De Sena's Background and Creation of Spartan Race
Joe De Sena grew up in Queens, New York, and developed a strong work ethic early on, working odd jobs and eventually building a successful pool business. In his 20s, he transitioned into Wall Street, where he thrived but found the high-stress environment unfulfilling. A lifelong athlete, Joe became deeply involved in endurance sports, participating in ultra-marathons, adventure races, and triathlons.
This passion for extreme challenges inspired him to create Spartan Race 24 years ago, aiming to bring the transformative power of endurance racing and physical struggle to a broader audience. Spartan Race focuses on building mental and physical resilience through challenging, obstacle-filled courses designed to push participants beyond their comfort zones.
